Oppo- I’ll be going to the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte and was wanted to know how strict they were on the cooler restrictions? I have a cooler that’s 2.5 inches too tall (16.5 over 14) but every other dimension is 1-3" shorter. I’d prefer to use mine as its a backpack cooler and would be easier to carry around all day, but if I dont have a chance of getting in with it I’ll just get a new smaller one.

Unless its completely obvious its too big, you should probably be ok with it. I’ve been to Indy and Richmond and I haven’t seen them ever measure a cooler, however, I know they are very strict about coolers being soft-sided.

Meaning they require soft-sided coolers?

If it were slightly off in anything but height you’d probably be ok. The height is dictated by needing to fit under the edge of the bleachers. You may squeak by if you don’t fill it completely and can squeeze it down to meet the height requirement.
I haven’t been to Charlotte for a NASCAR race, but I can say that at Martisville they eyeball length and width to check compliance, but they have you sit the cooler on a table and have a stick that represents the maximum height and physically verify that. Bristol actually verifies all dimensions with a tape rectangle on the table and a height stick.

I’ve never heard any issue about soft-sided vs hard-sided, but have only been to races there a handful of times. They also don’t make mention of it in their policy , so I’d be surprised if they gave you crap about it either way.
As long as the cooler is within spitting distance of the equivalent volume of their 14x14x14 cooler, I doubt they’ll have any issue. This is NASCAR after all, not an airline.

Pretty cool they allow them at all. Most venues would prefer you buy their $5 soft drinks and $10 lukewarm draft beer.

Thank you- and yeah, i wasnt sure if it was height or width/length that they keep an eye out for. I’ll order a cheapo one and go from there. Thanks!

Yes. I know Richmond and IMS, all coolers must be soft-sided. CMS doesn’t have that specifically on their website, so they may not care.

Do you know their rationale for that requirement?

No I don’t. They’ll probably say safety or something or the soft-sided are easier to fit under your seat.
